How to Pick Your Bridesmaids

You could root out an Ouija board an ask the spirit world which pals would make the best bridesmaids, but who has the time? Instead, we’ve written a quick and easy guide on picking your bridesmaids.

Bridesmaid Material

It goes without saying that your bridesmaids should be the pals you’re closest to, but it’s also important to consider how well they fit the role in practical terms. Maybe Sandra from tag rugby isn’t the calming influence you need on your big day? And maybe Julie, your pal from the communist yoga retreat, has zero interest in DIYing a flower wall.

No matter what kind of wedding you’re having, your bridesmaids will be taking on some crucial tasks and supporting you through some stressful moments. Choose people who are genuinely interested in helping you have a great wedding.

It’s Not Tit-For-Tat

You don’t have to ask somebody to be in your bridal party just because you were in theirs. You’re going to be spending a lot of time with your bridesmaids, relying on them to carry out some important tasks, so picking somebody just to avoid an awkward conversation won’t bode well.

If your numbers are more limited than your pals, or if you’ve lost touch since her wedding, don’t sweat it. There are ways of including pals that can’t be in your bridal party, and most people really won’t mind skipping bridesmaid duty.

Run Your Budget

Hey, it’s your wedding budget again, here to crush your dreams!

Seriously though, big bridal parties cost a lot. In Ireland, most couples will cover the cost of bridesmaids’ dresses and bouquets. There’s also hair and makeup to consider, and some brides also buy keepsakes for their maids.

Think of all the things you’ll want your bridesmaid to have, tot up the cost, then multiply it by how many maids you’d like. If the figure doesn’t make you dizzy, great! Ask away. If you’re suddenly feeling less enthused, it might be time to make some cuts.

Consider In-Laws

This will depend on family dynamics and whether you’re marrying a man or a woman, but it’s often a nice idea to include your partner’s sister/s in your bridal party.

International Bridesmaid Coordination

Living abroad shouldn’t preclude somebody from being a bridesmaid, but make sure you and the maid-to-be are happy to do some troubleshooting.

Most importantly, make sure you’re on the same page about the big appointments. You might think your pal will be able to make the trip to see you say yes to the dress, but an extra train ticket or flight could well be out of the question for her. Have a proper chat about logistics as early as possible and you’ll avoid any international dramas.
